In 1971, the author and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth visited Bristol Prison whilst conducting research for a book and noticed the inmates playing this game, at around the same time he also saw the Royal Family playing the game on a British TV documentary . He placed a small ad in The Times inviting anyone interested in taking part in a National Championships to contact him. Hundreds replied and after hooking up with J.W.Spear & Son Ltd, the Championships were born.

The original Statue was destroyed during WWII. Local Legend has it that , the day after the original statue was destroyed , a handwritten note was found , which read -- "I don’t know who destroyed me, but I know why: so that I won’t play the funeral march for your leader.". The picture shows the replica that was placed at the same location. Who is depicted in this statue?

Keith Miller refused to bowl the new ball , as Ikin had been one of the Rats of Tobruk that had helped win the African Campaign during WWII. Since this was Ikin Benefit match, Keith Miller didn't want to bowl Ikin out in the 90s. However Ray Lindwall took the ball and got Ikin out on 99.

Beethoven admired the ideals of the French Revolution, and Napoleon as their embodiment, but the composer was so disgusted when Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of the French in May 1804, that he went to the table where the completed score lay, took hold of the title-page and scratched the name Bonaparte out so violently that he created a hole in the paper. He later changed the title to Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire d'un grand'uomo ("heroic symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man").
