Claim to fame

Camille Gutt , a Belgian Jewish Economist is believed to have been responsible for the saving of the Belgian Franc before and after World War II. Before the war, he saved the Belgian currency by secretly transferring the gold reserves of the Belgian National Bank out of Nazi reach. After the war, he stabilized the Belgian franc and forestalled inflation, with what still is known as the Gutt operation. However his claim to fame comes as being the first person to be something. Had participated in last years quiz and had been on stage last year -- but was totally disheartened by the cheesy presentation and the "either you know it or you don't know it" questions.

Due to shift in companies -- Didn't participate in quiz (the quiz entry fee was 6k) and sat peacefully in the audience and started attempting the questions. Half way through the quiz , I realized that the same cheesy presentation had to be endured this year as well. However the questions were surprisingly decent. In fact didn't mind sitting thru the quiz.

The cutoff for the prelims was 19 on 30 -- And I think CTS with Shubham Roy and Venkatesh NA topped the prelims with 26. A relatively easy prelims but kept everyone interested.

Just a couple of things that the quizmaster probably have to take care

-- The Length of the quiz -- With just 5 round of quizzing -- the quiz is extremely short and is totally unfair to the participants who spend 6k for the quiz. The quiz should definitely be longer.

-- The Scoring system -- Was extremely skewed -- having 20 points in one round and 10 points for each buzzer basically ensures that you win the quiz -- if you are awake through just two rounds.

Questions in rounds 1 and 3 in the finals ( the Bonus round and Killer Fields Round) might give immense pleasure to the QM but if the questions are archane -- it is pure luck -- not quizzing.
Especially in the Killer Fields round -- after the grids for the first four teams , I think the 5th and 6th teams were stunned to get lists that you wont get even if you mugged.

Overall a better show compared to last year with respect to the questions -- but a lot of improvement is still possible.

Review of Inspiron 2009 -- UVCE Quiz

The day started with two petrol heads meeting at Thirumangalam at 5:15 in the morning. A nice peaceful drive saw Anish and I reach Bangalore by 9:45 -- well ahead of the scheduled time for the quiz. Having had breakfast we decided to sit down for the quiz , when the organizers decided to hold two events Biz Wiz and the corporate quiz at the same time. Corporate Quizzers found themselves in a lecture hall while the quiz was about to begin in a quadrangular. After that little hiccup everyone turned up again at the quadrangular and the prelims went thru. Slisha on the tough side but there were enough clues in each question.

10.Steven Speilberg Colloborated with this company for the realism of intimate.... (couldnt get it fully). Which company and what technology?

Telepresence by Cisco

The finals had some really good teams JK+Kid , Udupa+Ajay , Vinod Rajamani+Tanmay , Apu + Tups , Naveen Giles + Team , Nikhil Lasrado + Team. A very nice finals , but the only grouse was that it was a bit of a hurricane final. The organisers really need to know about scheduling events. Mitesh had to rush through the finals , in order to not reduce the number of rounds. Otherwise the questions were really nice and was good fun. The day ended with a nice drive down to Chennai.

Bottom line -- A great Trip , a Good Quiz , and Bad scheduling and organizing by college.
