Which country?

The Greeks called it Taprobane, the Portugese called it Ceilao. The Official prefix to the name of the place in 1972 was " Free , soveriegn and independent Republic" but in 1978 , it was changed to "Democratic Socialist Republic". The current name of this place is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning resplendent land. The English historian James Emerson Tennent theorized that a southern city in the country was the ancient sea port - Tarshish from which King Solomon is said to have drawn ivory , peacocks and other valuables. Which country is this?

Sri Lanka - also called Serendip by the Arabs
